Jasmine Green Tea Dragon Pearl
This is a premium grade Chinese Jasmine green tea from Fujian Province. Made from tender young buds & leaves, this handrolled green tea is naturally scented with jasmine blossoms over several nights. The result is an exquisitely light & sweet Jasmine Green tea.
Chinese teas are usually named in descriptive ways such as our Silver Needle or Dragon well and this Jasmine Green tea is named “Dragon Pearl Tea” or “moli long zhu” and it is no exception to this. This Jasmine Green tea Dragon Pearl leaves are hand tied and rolled into pearl shapes giving it its name. The dragon part, sometime referred to as Phoenix Pearls comes from the look of the leaves when they unfurl, looking like Chinese dragons or the phoenix wings as it rise from the ash. The best jasmine dragon pearl originate from the Tai Mu mountains in north east Fujian province, China, and uses the finest green tea leaves available. The tea is picked in the spring meaning the tea contains some white tips common in high grade early green tea or white tea. It is importent to ask about the tea’s quality since some sell the same looking tea made from low grade tea leaves (since usaully it is hard to detect the leaf quality when the leaves are rolled in to a pearl shape).
Jasmine Scenting process
The scenting of the tea leaves with Jasmine happens later in the year and involves a traditional scenting process of layering the tea leaves with fresh jasmine blossoms. The jasmine blossoms naturally open at dusk and the scent is infused into the tea leaves. This process is repeated over several days so when the tea is brewed it gives a rich sweet Jasmine Green tea flavour and scent. There is a common misconception that jasmine green tea should contain jasmine blossoms. Jasmine blossoms tend to only be found in cheaper lower grade jasmine teas where the scenting process has not been carried out and the jasmine scent comes from the jasmine blossoms blended with the tea or in some cases artificial flavouring. The high grade naturally scented jasmine green tea types usually have the blossoms painstakingly removed.
The other teas that we sell that are scented in the same way are Jasmine Silver Needle and Lychee black tea. We also carry other, naturally scented teas such as Russian Caravan and Bohea (wuyi) Lapsang shouchong which are natural smoked teas and our Earl grey is also naturally scented with Bergamot oil.
Jasmine is a pleasantly aromatic plant that promotes relaxation, calm, and reduces stress. Combining both the health benefits of Green Tea and Jasmine flowers, the Imperial Jasmine Green Tea has been used by the Imperial Families for hundreds of years in China to improve appetite and digestion, reduce anxiety, and improve skin.
